Why do Inkjet Printheads Clog?

Printheads (print heads) becoming blocked or clogged have been an issue since the invention of inkjet technology in 1976. We will try and explain some of the reasons for why this happens.

What does a blocked or clogged printhead (print head) look like?

When a printhead (print head) becomes blocked or clogged, some or all of the colors refuse to print causing one or more of the following:

·         Blank printing or copying

·         Discolored printing or copying

·         White or discolored banding

·         “Blocked Printhead” error (terminology may vary slightly on your specific machine’s display)

·         Light printing or copying

The following faults are similar but ARE NOT fixed by cleaning the printhead (print head).

·         Black lines of vertical banding (paper path direction)

·         “Printhead not Installed” error (terminology may vary slightly on your machine’s display)

·         “Ink not Installed” (terminology may vary slightly on your machine’s display)

A blocked or clogged printhead (print head) is best diagnosed by running a nozzle check routine or test page. This allows you to see if any nozzles are blocked or clogged, and usually offers the option of running a cleaning cycle.

Reasons why Printheads Become Blocked or Clogged

Running Inkjet Cartridges Dry

We have all done it. It saves time, effort, and a little bit of money. However, this allows air to enter the printhead (print head). Air bubbles can prevent the firing elements from functioning properly. This prevents ink from leaving the printhead (print head).

Not Using Printer on a Regular Basis

Printheads (print heads) have microscopic nozzles that can clog when exposed to the air for more than a few minutes. Inkjet printers are designed to prevent the nozzles from drying out when the printer is idle. A printer that is not used for a long period of time is more likely to allow air to be exposed to the printhead (print head) surface, resulting in a noticeable decrease in print quality.

Old Inkjet Cartridges

Inkjets have a shelf life or approximately 18 months. If used after this, it can block printheads (print heads). Black ink especially can form a sediment filter and/or the nozzles.

Encountering print or copying problems after changing inkjet cartridges is an indicator or poor ink quality. But, also keep in mind that it could have been caused by running the old inkjet cartridge dry before changing them.

If in doubt, install a new inkjet cartridge (preferably a genuine brand inkjet cartridge). If using ink from a new supplier for the first time, be sure to follow the new suppliers’ instructions carefully. This is especially true if converting to a CISS system.
